Figurative painting, in the end, visualizes the tragedy of human beings on the surface. It is known that the dynamic of the modern age exposes the individual to an incredible flow of data. The hurtful realities of our lives and the heavy agenda manage to make each person unhappy in proportion to their sensitivities.
In recent times we see the term “disproportionate force or proportionate force” being used for some tragic incidents both at home and in different regions of the world. The term indicates violence applied in a reckless manner and is sometimes put forward as a so-called ethic or rule of war.
In modern thinking, the war itself and the violence, taken in a political way is a crime against humanity irrespective of the individual or social basis on which they are built .
“The sleep of reason creates monsters” said Goya. This sentence attributed to Goya in his most mature period of life, regarding the ongoing tragedy of his people, unfortunately is as up to date now as then.
The title of this exhibition is “Proportionate Force”. It emerged as an individual work based on the visual material in the media, then turned into a project containing a collection of twenty pieces of works in various sizes.
Effort to bring current events to the fore, is not a consequence of a political engagement, amidst the regular workflow of the artist, on the contrary it has to be taken as the artist’s conscious reaction to them. The works in question, makes reference to well known themes and compositions recurring in art history countless times. It is more of an attempt to seek expression through plastic means rather than make political gestures.
